Gday,
its been really bonz the past few yonks, Marvel have been pumping out really great flicks at a phenomenal rate , so it was only logical that DC movies would follow , now, DC heros (well two mostly) have been getting flicks made about them for years, so letes start with what had come become before.
Lets start with the Caped Crusader shall we ....
the first Batman movie I saw was the tv series movie in which Bats had every evil bugger in Bathistory chasing him and Robin all over assundry, basically it was a long tv episode BUT it was a ripper none the less ...A few decades down the road and Tim Burton produced BATMAN, he put the hood on Michael Keaton, who wasnt too foul at the gig to be fair, but more importantly he put Jack Nicholson inside the Joker , Ceasr Romero was good but Jack as the Joker was phenomenal.
Michael Keaton returned in BATMAN RETURNS which had Catwoman and The Penguin, Michell Phiefer and Danny De Vito respectively, playing not nice with Gotham, have to say not one of my personal favourites , it seemed a bit dark even for Burton, but people dug it so what do I know.......then came BATMAN FOREVER , Joel Schumacher got Val Kilmer, Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones , Chris Odonnell and a cast of dozens lined up so we could watch watch The Riddler and Two Face try to beat the crap out of The Dynamic Duo....the next Bat flick that was produced was probably my favourite BATMAN AND ROBIN George Clooney and Cris Odonnell were the dynamic duo, Uma Thurman and Arnie Shcwarz were Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze respectively and Alicia Silverstone appeared as Batgirl , lots of people hate this flick , fair enough , I dont and this is my blogaroo.....
THE CHRISTIAN BALE ERA
Whoever thought Christian Bale would make a great Batman is a frikkin genius , over the course of 3 movie the older Bat flicks were all but demolished as purile shit (not by me) as the bat story was brought from the beginnings to a rather pleasant end for the caped crusader, I thought he'd die on the job, but nup he got to retire to a greek island somewhere in greece....my favoirte of the 3 movies was The Dark Knight cause The Joker was in it , and what a Joker , the late great Heath ledger done an amazing job rebooting the Joker as a total pyschopath crime lord , we even got 8.7 minutes of Harvey Dent / Two Face, awesome flick, one I still watch with amazing regularity today......but like all Batman series , their is one red headed stepchild and #3 THE DARK KNIGHT RISES with Bane as a terrorist cutting of Gotham from the rest of the U.S aint exactly my favourite, I dont hate it, I still watch it unlike Batman Returns which I dont, ....There is a new Batman doing the rounds at the moment which I will get too shortly
The First Superman flick I can remeber was with George Reeves in SUPERMAN AND THE MOLE MEN (1951) , I saw it on tele cut into 2 seperate episodes , I guess it was at the movies in Australia when it came out , It was a bit before my imminent arrival so I got to see it after school on Ch 7 after school yonks after
Then after a few decades Christopher don the cape for his run as the Man of Steel and yes I did believe a man could fly , Reeves did 4 movies as Kal-El all with varying success
the first was nominally the best Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman and Chris nailed their parts ,BUT my personal favourite was SUPERMAN 2 it had Zod and Luthor and all sorts of mayhem, Terrence Stamp had me convinced he was a Kryptonian fascist ...great flick
As for Superman 3 and Superman 4 (A quest for peace) yeh well , I dont watch either of them any more , matter of fact I didnt even finish Superman 4 when i saw it at Hoyts Cinema in George street Sydney , I seem to remember leaving before the half way mark and going to my favourite record store instead(but thats another blog altogether) ...yeh they pretty much blew chunks ......
A couple of decaades down the track , 2006, to be accurate and SUPERMAN RETURNS hit the screens to a resounding thud , but I liked it , the story was very interesting to me , Supes leaves Earth to search for remaining Krytonians and Lois and the gang get on with their lives , Clark returns and tries to pick up where he left off , with varying success , Kevin Spacey was a ridiculously good Luthor , wait thats a oxymoronism, he was a brilliantly evil Luthor..better....Lex gets Supes into all kinds of shit (again) but the Man of Steel prevails with seemingly some help from Lois 's super powered son ...see, now there was the next movie but nup they reckon the franchise was killed off by the lousy reviews ...BUT I LIKED IT.
Then a few more years down the trail and Henry Cavill was hired to put on the big red S and once again I dug it , the missus hates it, way too much destruction during the Kal v Zod battle for her liking , But I figure if 2 kryptonians are belting the bejeezus out of each other , shits gonna break, right?....now a lot of people whined about this movie not being in line with Superman theology, to that i say which Superman storyline are you referring , they have rebooted the DC universe a half dozen times...everything is jumbled as f**k nowadays.
THEN, last year the DC universe started coming together leading up to, I think, the Apocolypse story line when SUPERMAN V BATMAN Dawn of Justice hit the screens and what a flick , we even got added Amazon , there might have been a touch too much political intrigue for my taste but still it was a bout 12% of the movie so that wasn't bad, Henry Cavill and Ben Afleck done outstanding jobs as did Gal Gadot as the Amazonian Princess BUT how good was Jesse Eisenberg as the new Lex Luthor , some people said he was a touch too insane for their liking, maybe so, but it Luthor his probably faking it to fool us....It was during the flick we got to see the members of the forthcoming JLA movie make their first appearances , of particular interest was the Flash showed up in the batcave , in a dream sequence or not , very reminiscent of Crisi on Infinate Earths when Bazza was running like crazy through the speed vortex ....the rest of the league showed up on meta human files collected by Luthor , Cyborg , Aquaman and Wonderwoman .....their is also a salute to the classic comic The Death of Superman when Luthor gains access to the kryptonian ship and cretes a Zod/Luthor clone very reminscent of Doomsday, very reminiscent indeed, it kill Kal ....but at the funeral in Smallville as Bruce and Diana depart the dirt on Clark's coffin starts to vibrate and levitate...interesting much?
Last August the world favourite group of Super villians got a jersey when THE SUICIDE SQUAD movie was released , what a great flick, Will Smith was his usual brilliant self BUT how good were Margot Robbie and Jared Leto and Harley Quinn and The Joker, beyond awesome is my rating of the two of 'em......the whole group was brilliantly cast although I aint quite sure why Slipknot got bumped off , but whatever ...also Ben Affleck made a couple of casual appearances as his Bat self during the flick, and also as his Bruce Wayne self when he takes the metahuman files from Amanda waller in exchange for some Bat style protection.
GREEN LANTERN , yep, I think Ryan Reynolds done an outstanding job as the Lantern of this sector , hell they even stuck to the know history of the character for the most part ...shame all the world didnt like it , I reckon Ryan Lantern and Mark Strongs Sinestro would have made a great second movie ...but what do I know
Then came JONAH HEX...what a great flick, Josh Brolin done an outstanding job as the bounty hunter who can talk to the dead, another movie that deserved a sequel ...anyway
the next couple of years are gonna be busy if your a super hero movie fan
WONDER WOMAN JUNE 2017, JUSTICE LEAGUE NOV 2017, FLASH MARCH 2018, AQUAMAN OCTOBER 2018, SHAZAM APRIL 2019, with Green Lantern and Cyborg movie for 2020 good as confirmed ....with a another stand alone Batman & Superman movie chucked in there somewhere as well.....gonna be the grouse I reckon.
OTHER DC BASED MOVIES - GOOD, BAD, ABSOLUTE CRAP
Lets get the elephant out of the room first , the JLA movie of 1997, yes I know it was a only tv movie BUT it was forced upon us and to be fair it was the shits
Atom, Lantern, Flash, Ice and some green chick were badly portrayed, acted and general looked fkn awful , their day jobs didnt even match up with the comics , and we wont even talk about Major Charles Emmerson-Winchester III portayal of Jo'nn Jo'nzz ...a abolute headshaker...so bad its ...no it aint good ...its crap
Speaking of absolute crap DC based movies ...lets think for a moment about the following
SUPERGIRL, SWAMP THING, STEEL & CATWOMAN ....thinking about them are we ?...right lets never do that again , the lot of them were horrific dross every copy should be chucked in a volcano or some such.
