Dr Who: The Capaldi Era ...thus far

I had to admit, I was thinking when they announced the forthcoming regeneration "his a bit old" like I should be pointing any fingers...BUT, Capaldi won me over virtually immediately, which is strange for Who, it usually takes me a good half season.....I have to say, im lookin well forward to the new season....SO,with the new season arriving on Sunday night,  here is the Capaldi story....

Granted a whole new regenerative cycle by the Time Lords, the Doctor experienced an explosive and unprecedented thirteenth regeneration, ending the Siege of Trenzalore. A new Doctor - with a sharp face, bushy brows and boggle eyes - faced a bewildered Clara, across the console. A Doctor who has seemingly forgotten how to fly the TARDIS… Though little is yet known of this Doctor’s journeys, at some point in his future, he helped his previous incarnations freeze Gallifrey in a pocket universe.

Peter Dougan Capaldi (born 14 April 1958), is a Scottish actor and Academy Award-winning director. He has played three roles in the Doctor Who , most notably that of the Twelfth Doctor. He first played the Doctor in a brief cameo in The Day of the Doctor, and then succeeded Matt Smith in the role after  The Time of the Doctor.....Like Sixth Doctor Colin Baker before him, Capaldi appeared in a different role in Doctor Who prior to playing the Doctor. Capaldi portrayed Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii, first broadcast in 2008. He also appeared in all five episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth in 2009, playing John Frobisher.

At 55 years of age at both the time of his casting and the time of filming his first scenes as the Doctor, Capaldi was the same age as William Hartnell and the oldest actor since Hartnell to begin playing the Doctor on a regular basis (John Hurt was older by almost 20 years when he first appeared in the role, but his War Doctor incarnation never intended to be ongoing).

During the Jon Pertwee years of Doctor Who, young man Capaldi sent scripts to the production office. Barry Letts began a correspondence with Capaldi, which eventually resulted in an invitation for the youngster to visit BBC Television Centre. Capaldi met Letts, Terrance Dicks and Pertwee. He later cited the incident as formative to his career as a professional actor, writer and director. ....Capaldi was announced as the Twelfth Doctor in a live broadcast simulcast worldwide on 4 August 2013. His appearance on the programme was notable for his striking a pose identified with William Hartnell's First Doctor — adjusting his lapels — as he took the stage.

The debut Capaldi episode was titles "DEEP BREATH" and gave Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax a guest role and a job and a half keeping a freshly regenerated time lord from creating havoc while trying to figure out the disappearence of many Londoners and clockwork androids

His debut appearance during the climax of The Day of the Doctor was kept a surprise from viewers as the BBC had indicated he would debut at Christmas. His initial appearance, lasting only one and a half seconds as he exclaimed "No sir, all thirteen!" (indicating acknowledgement of the War Doctor), revealed little other than his hand pulling a lever in his TARDIS and an extreme close-up on his eyes.

And there was Androids in Sherwood Forest giving Robin Hood the wobblies..

.some beings from a another dimension that were turning people 2d ....

Along with the doctor we found out the moon was a egg ...

.An overnight super charged growth spurt saved the earth from a solar flare...

and brain sucking space crabs got the Doctor and Santa Claus to team up .

Clara Oswald is one of the Doctor’s most extraordinary companions. In order to help the Doctor she allowed the time winds to tear her into countless different iterations of herself, or as River phrased it, ‘A million versions of you, living and dying all over time and space, like echoes.’ These different Claras helped the Time Lord on many occasions, with one of them even persuading the First Doctor to steal the TARDIS that became ‘his’ time machine.....

Clara was present when the Eleventh Doctor regenerated and is having a tough time dealing with the Twelfth Doctor. Whereas the ‘old’ Doctor was her friend and a trusted figure, this ‘new’ man is a mystery to her. He doesn’t hug, treats her with a certain coldness and has no compunction in calling her ‘an egomaniac, needy game-player’…The Doctor has asked Clara if he is a good man and she admitted she didn’t know. Let’s hope they’ll both find out as the impossible girl continues her adventures with the man in the blue box…

He was the man who was unfazed by the Doctor, unafraid of Missy and unequivocal in his love for Clara. He was enjoying life as a civilian, in love and in a job he adored, believing he had walked away from soldiering… But he was wrong, and Danny Pink’s finest hour came as he delivered on a promise – a promise of a soldier…After he momentarily distracted the Skorovox Blitzer, or as Clara put it, ‘saved the world’, an uneasy truce seemed to exist between him and the Time Lord. And when a wild proliferation of trees and plants right across the globe brought them together, the Doctor even started calling Danny ‘Mr Pink’ as opposed to ‘PE’....

Tragedy struck when during a phone conversation with Clara, Danny was hit by a car. Mr Armitage confirmed the loss to Coal Hill School, ‘I have gathered you all here today to say that Mr Pink – that Danny Pink – has sadly passed away… It was no secret that he had a close relationship with Oswald…’

But Miss Oswald would see him again…When Danny was ‘revived’ during Missy’s attempt to weaponise the dead of planet Earth, he was strong enough to resist his ‘upgrade’ into a Cyberman and was able to ignore Missy’s commands. He delivered a rousing speech to the fallen who had risen again and led them in an attack on the clouds that threatened mankind. But in doing so, he was taken away from Clara again, this time forever.....‘Mr Pink was an inspiration to all of those who knew him. A soldier, teacher…. A friend.’

Missy has at last revealed her true identity to the Doctor… She is his old enemy, formerly known as the Master! …

Missy is a Time Lady and like the Doctor, she’s from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. They were friends in their youth and both chose to ignore their people’s policy of non-intervention with other species, but unlike the Doctor, Missy chose to travel the universe causing chaos and revelling in wickedness on an epic scale....

Missy allied herself with the Cybermen she planned to convert the dead of planet Earth, ‘upgrading’ the fallen into a vast army of silver soldiers.

But unusually, she planned to give the Doctor this terrifying force, keen to see what he would do with such power. The Doctor shunned the opportunity, however, and Danny was able to lead the ‘new born’ Cybermen meaning Missy’s scheme was defeated.

But Clara wanted revenge on the Time Lady and seemed willing to kill her. The Doctor prevented this, although before we discovered what he himself would do, a solitary Cyberman– a figure later revealed to be the Brigadier - appeared to destroy Missy.....

But the self confessed ‘Queen of Evil’ has a history of returning from the dead… Who knows if Missy’s latest disappearance is just part of another diabolical master plan…

The Doctor described the Skovox Blitzer as one of the deadliest killing machines ever created, which is quite a claim, coming from someone who has faced Daleks, Quarks and a Raston Warrior Robot…The Blitzer had enough explosives in its armoury to destroy the entire planet, meaning suddenly, nobody was safe.....

The Doctor gambled that the Blitzer would follow orders without question, even if its own existence was at stake. When he was able to imitate its superior officer, he persuaded it to shut down and later dumped it in deep space. The gamble had paid off! ‘Farewell, Skovox Blitzer,’ the Doctor said as he watched the murderous machine drift away, ‘Have a nice war!’

The Foretold looks like an ancient, terrifying mummy - the kind of creature that has featured in scary stories and creaky horror movies for generations… But facts about the bandaged terror were scarce as the only ones who could see it were its victims, and a sighting of the creature meant only one thing for the witness: death!...

The Foretold was considered by many to be myth and according to the Doctor, tales about it first appeared over five thousand years ago. Some stories claimed that a secret riddle or a single word would stop it and he also mentioned that some victims tried to plead for their lives or attempted to buy their way out of trouble, but never with any success: Once someone had seen the Foretold, death would follow in exactly 66 seconds…The mystery of the Foretold had been unravelled. As the Doctor phrased it, the creature had been an ‘ancient soldier driven by malfunctioning tech’. But one question lingered - who or what had been investigating the creature, orchestrating the whole trip on the Orient Express and luring the Doctor to the train? For the time being, the question remains unanswered…

‘My name is Madame Karabraxos… I was once the wealthiest person in the universe… I am dying with many, many regrets…’ This is her story...

.Madame Karabraxos was the Head of the Bank of Karabraxos, where she had a clone of herself in every facility, claiming it was the only way to control her own security. But despite placing faith in these myriad versions of herself, such as Ms Delphox (pictured), she was ruthless enough to burn them when she felt they had let her down....Sure enough, when Madame Karabraxos was elderly and on the verge of death she made contact with the Doctor and began a chain of events that resulted in the Teller and the one other member of his species reaching safety. Karabraxos perpetrated many crimes in her extraordinary life, but as it ebbed away, she perhaps found a degree of redemption…

The Teller was creature of awesome power able to telepathically sense guilt and turn a victim’s brain to ‘soup’ without even touching them. These two abilities alone made him invaluable to the Bank of Karabraxos…The Teller cut a terrifying figure in the corridors and courtyards of the Bank of Karabraxos. In the more public areas he was enchained and flanked by armed guards as he went about his grisly work, sniffing out anyone harbouring illegal intentions toward the bank. Once detected he would wipe his victim’s mind leaving them alive but unthinking...So how did Ms Delphox force the Teller to obey her?.....The answer lay locked up in a cell, imprisoned by Karabraxos: a female member of the Teller’s race who was the only other survivor of his species. The bank had been holding her hostage, a bargaining counter to ensure the Teller carried out their cruel instructions. The Doctor freed her and dropped them both off on a planet where they could live together, away from others. ‘So much mental traffic in the universe,’ the Time Lord reflected, ‘Solitude is the only peace.’

SO...there you go ...as I mentioned, the brand new shiny season of Capaldi Who - ism's begins on Sunday 20th September ( in Aussie anyway)
