LOOK UP IN THE SKY...
was the opening line to, quite possibly, my favourite tv show of my kid-dom....most of my mates got home from school, and then hit the streets for some bike riding or a game of footy, and I was out there too, I was just there a half hour later, cause I just had to get my daily fix of Kryptonion, the show, of course was starring a member of the Gone with the Wind ensemble, George Reeves, and there I sat with my mountain of black and white dc comics, I always liked Supe's, the boxes of comics proved that, but seeing him on the old cathode brain de-generator(or TV if you like) tipped him over the edge to be top of my bestest Super hero list.
Since his kick off in the 30's, Supes had a non stop cacohony of evil, bent on planet ruling, lunatics, trying to do him some damage and generally raising all kinds of hell, Luthor, Braniac, Zod, Myxpltk, Metallo, Bizarro, Toyman and the big one, the one that stunned me the one that killed the big blue cheese, DOOMSDAY...I got to tell you, I wasn't expecting them to kill off Superman, in the long run ,he was good as gold, but bloody hell....
the men who have played Superman have done an outstanding job, in what I think is a hard acting job, in my opinion anyway, I was convinced that George Reeves was the best Superman i'd seen and while his still near the top, I think the tip of the hat has to go to Christopher Reeves as the best version, I recently got my hands on the Superman serial from the 40's starring Kirk Alyn, he wasn't too foul either,...
then in the 70's came the late, great Christopher Reeves, his movie advertisement was "Youll believe a man can fly" and I sure did, brilliant flicks, even the crap one's weren't that bad...there was a Superboy tv series produced as well, I've seen the you tube clips so I cant give a real definite opinion of the production...BUT...the show had Bizarro in it, the only Super series to have the twisted version of Supe's, trouble is, the clip I saw Bizarro was a nice bloke, got that a smidge wrong methinks...
Then came Lois & Clark, 4 years of what I think was a making of the Earth 2 Superman and Lois Lane-Kent, the comic E-2 Kents seemed very similar to the tv series, not a bad show, had Zod, H.G Wells and a few crims with some Earth 2 leanings.....then came Brandon Routh, now I dunno what went wrong with the flick, was it the storyline, Supes leaving Earth to find his origins, I actually thought that there was a graphic novel with this premise prior to the flick, but i cant find it, anyway, was it the general feel of the film ?, I do know that Kevin Spacey picked up where Gene Hackman left off as Luthor, well done by him...
as for the rest of the film, I dunno, but it was missing ..IT, I still watch it, but it aint my fave by a long shot......
THEN came Smallville, now I dont know about anyone else...but this adaptation gave me the shits initially, well, for 6 years, but anyway, its a great show, dont get me wrong, but talk about f**k with the origin story, for starters, Clark couldnt fly till the last ten minutes of the last show...Kryptonite affected EVERYONE, Lex and Clark were mates, Jor -El sounded and acted like Zod from the Superman 2, but we never saw him, sure they had the Justice Society from Earth 2, well most of them, and the Legion of Super heroes and a good percentage of the Justice League and I did enjoy James Marsters version of Braniac, but I did sit there for years screaming at the TV.."THATS WRONG, CLARK/ SUPERMAN DIDNT DO THAT"...yep, they frigged with me, but, I still got all the box sets...HAHAHA.....
I advise that you should go get that one and a couple of others.....
