To say I'm a fan of the bad guys is a HUGE understatement to say the least
I mean lets face it without Lex Luthor and other raging loonies Supe's was just gonna be building dams and stopping volcano's exploding.....and if there were no baddies, Batman would never have come to pass, cause he would have grown up a spoilt rich playboy FOR REAL.....Yeah, baddies are the meat and potatoes of superhero-dom (?)...and havent there been some deadset brilliant villian's
I cant honestly say I prefer either Marvel or DC as they both have a good range of freaky villians.
The current spate of super hero movies have re-created their villanous counterparts quite well, the best of the lot would probably be Ian Mckelland and his playing of Magneto in the first 3 X-men movies...having said that Vinnie Jones did an exceptional job as Juggernaut and Mystique by Rebecca Romjin was absolutely awesome....mind you, Stephen Dorf as Deacon Frost in Blade 1 was pretty damn evil and unlike most of the known universe, Unlike most of the known universe, I enjoyed Daredevil, Colin Farrell as Bullseye and Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP) was fantastic as Kingpin...oh what the hell, I will add Damien McMahons version of Viktor Von Doom as rating right up there as well, lots of people thought he didnt do it justice, but I disagree, he worked with what they gave him and he scored....and as for Loki in Thor and The Avengers played by Tom Thiddleston, well, it wasnt quite how I pictured the god of mischeif,. but it wasnt badly played anyway...
and then there was the Spiderman series, which has continued recently with The Amazing Spiderman, which resembles Sam Raimeys versions in the fact that Spidey wears red and blue only...all the villians in these flicks have been spot on and they stuck to the classics DOC OC, VENOM, GREEN GOBLIN, SANDMAN AND HOBGOBLIN, and every single one of them was done brilliantly, I particularly enjoyed Doc Oc in Spidey two with the Sandman coming a close second, more recently , the playing of Dr Curt Connors (The Lizard) by Rhys Ifans was top shelf indeed, and they stuck to the marvel script, where as sometimes they tweaked the characterisation a smidge....as for the X-Men flicks, well, they sorta frigged with the mythology there a bit didnt they, for instance I hear you say..okee dokee, how about SABRETOOTH, I much preferred Tyler Manes take on 'Tooth than I did Liv Shreibers, although I dont think Liv's character was called Sabretooth during the flick was he ?...also in Wolverine, Blob was just a guy with a eating disorder...WHAT THE?...Toad however, was done very well indeed.
THE EVIL OF THE DC UNIVERSE
As for DC hero films...well, its been a mixed bag at best, the producers have never quite got the villians right, they been real close, but they missed it by <----> that much
SUPE'S BADDIE'S
Lex Luthor.... the bald, hyper-genius, meglo-maniacal socio-path, I firmly believe the versions of him throught the years havent really captured the essence of the villian, as a matter of fact, I think the nearest they have come is the animated versions in All Star Superman and Superman/Batman-Public Enemies....as for real life versions, Michael Rosenbaum as young Lex in Smallville was getting there, but they frigged around with the character and then bumped him off, John Glover who played Lionel Luthor was closer to my idea of Lex than Michaels came... Kevin Spaceys, Luthor was pretty damn good, playing something fairly similar to Gene Hackmans real estate happy version in the Chritstopher Reeves movies..some people I know hated Spacey's version, I didnt, to each there own I guess.....but then I enjoyed that whole 2006 Superman flick, although, its known I'm partial to big blue cheese...One version I did enjoy, was the one in JLA - Crisis on Two Earths, where thet Lex was the leader of the Justice league.
One of my personal faves is Braniac, well, I think filmdom needs a decent re-creation of the planet shrinking evil android, James Marsters version in Smallville was prettyt damn good, but it isnt how I picture Braniac going about his business...
as for Bizzaro, who is probably the most intresting of Kal's villians, well that Smallville take on him was just flat out crap...nuff said
AND leave us not forget probably my fave group of DC crooks...THE CRIME SYDNICATE...a evil Justice League, what a great friggin idea and their appearance in Crisis on 2 Earths was awesome
BATMAN ARKHAM ASSOCIATES
Lets keep delve into BatsThology for a bit...the alledged, godawful, Batman movies from the late 90's (that had nominations or won Oscars), had some classic villian portrayals...Jim Carey's Riddler was brilliant, Arnies Mister Freeze was pretty good, Danny DeVito as The Penguin was as the penguin should always be played and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy was well played....and I would like to give a honorable mention to one of my favourite actors of ALL time, Tommy Lee Jones, Two-Face shits all over the fleeting visit by Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight...
dont get me wrong Aaron Eckhart done a good job.. BUT.. Two-face lasted longer than 15 minutes in the DC universe....and on a rather important note...none of them vaguely resemble the villians from the 1960's Batman tv show...THANKFULLY....although Jim Carey is the closest....the recent Batman films, apart from having Heath as the most brilliant Joker EVER, had Liam Neeson do a stunning job of Ras Al-Ghul, wasnt real convinced by the most recent incarnation of Catwoman, and I aint touching Halle Berrys crap version, not blaming her mind you, but geez, REALLY....
the one BatCrook I have found the most interesting was Jason Todd aka Robin V.2 or The Red Hood, now there was one baddie I wanted to see get smashed into tiny little peices.
Other DC villians which have grabbed my interest over the eons have been Captain Cold, Sinestro and Baron Blitzkreig and one I consider to be fairly interesting...Deathstroke, or maybe I'm just a nut for highly trained assassin's......
anyway, there is my starter on a few of my fav Super crooks...I've probably left a few out, but I dare say I'll do another blog about the darker side of comic-dom
